Schools, Colleges in J&K to Reopen from May 13 — Border Areas Remain Closed; NIT Srinagar to Hold Online Classes: Srinagar, May 12 (JK Students Exclusive): The Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister, Sakina Itoo, has announced that all schools and colleges located in non-border areas of the Union Territory will reopen from Tuesday, May 13, 2025.
In a statement to Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Itoo clarified that a decision regarding the reopening of schools and colleges in border districts will be taken on Tuesday after further assessment.
“All educational institutions outside the border districts are set to resume normal operations from tomorrow,” she said, adding that the safety of students in sensitive areas remains a top priority.
The Director of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) echoed this, confirming that schools across Kashmir will reopen on May 13, except in the border districts of Kupwara, Baramulla, and the Gurez sub-division of Bandipora.
Meanwhile, the Divisional Commissioner of Jammu also took to social media platform X to affirm that educational institutions in non-border districts will reopen as scheduled, while those in border areas will remain closed until further notice.
NIT Srinagar to Conduct Online Classes Until June 6
In light of recent developments along the Line of Control (LoC), National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar has decided to continue its academic schedule online until June 6, 2025.
Registrar Prof. Atikur Rehman said that the move follows a week of rising tension along the borders. “Many students and faculty members returned to their hometowns for safety. With the situation now stabilizing, we’re planning a phased return to campus,” he said.
Key dates for NIT Srinagar are as follows:
- Online classes will be held from May 13 to June 6, 2025.
- Hostels will reopen on June 9 to allow students to return.
- Offline (physical) classes will resume on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.
The decision was taken under the guidance of NIT Srinagar Director, Prof. Binod Kumar Kanaujia.
