Implementation of National School Bag Policy 2020 in Jammu Division Schools: Jammu, April 27, 2025: The Directorate of School Education, Jammu, has officially issued a circular directing all schools across the Jammu Division to implement the National School Bag Policy, 2020. The initiative, guided by the Ministry of Education and NCERT, is aimed at reducing the physical burden of school bags and promoting the overall well-being of students.

Key Highlights of the Policy:

1. Weight Limits for School Bags:
Schools are instructed to adhere strictly to the weight limits specified below:

  • Teachers must inform students in advance about which books are required for the day.
  • Only essential textbooks are to be prescribed; extra or heavy books should be avoided.
  • Lightweight exercise books or files should be encouraged over thick notebooks.

2. Timetable Optimization:
To reduce daily load, schools must structure their timetables to prevent students from carrying too many heavy books in one day. Subject-wise scheduling should be coordinated among teachers.

3. Homework Guidelines:
The policy outlines clear homework limits:

  • Classes 1–2: No homework.
  • Classes 3–5: Maximum 2 hours per week.
  • Classes 6–8: Maximum 1 hour per day (5–6 hours/week).
  • Classes 9–12: Maximum 2 hours per day (10–12 hours/week).

Teachers are advised to assign homework collaboratively to avoid overburdening students. The focus should be on creative, experiential learning and problem-solving.

4. Provision of Lockers:
Where possible, schools should provide lockers for students to store their books and reduce daily load.

5. Digital Learning Encouragement:
Use of digital tools, e-books, and other lightweight materials should be promoted to ease the learning process.

6. Safe Drinking Water:
Schools must ensure availability of clean drinking water and regular maintenance of water storage facilities.

7. Parent Awareness:
Parent-Teacher Meetings (PTMs) should include discussions on the importance of lighter school bags and the role of parents in ensuring compliance.


Enforcement & Monitoring:
Chief Education Officers (CEOs) and Zonal Education Officers (ZEOs) are instructed to ensure the strict implementation of the policy across all government and private schools in the division.
